Introduction to the chosen/saints/elect
Paul clearly stated in several of the books he wrote who he was writing to. He was writing only to the saints, which is used interchangeably with chosen and the elect. Brethren is also included for the chosen.
Paul knew that those who were not saints (or the other words) would not understand him or would not seriously care about what he was writing. He knew that those with the Spirit of His Son in their hearts would understand him or listen to him and learn. Paul wrote this:
Galatians 4:6-7:
6 Because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba! Father!” 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

Here are some examples:
1 Corinthians 1:1-2:
1 Paul, called as an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,
2 To the church of God which is in Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:

2 Corinthians 1:1-5:

Ephesians 1:1-5:
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,
1 To the saints who are at Ephesus and are faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,

Who are chosen?
1 Peter 1:1-2:
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,
1 To those who reside as strangers, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
[Those who are going through sanctification are chosen. Notice He foreknew us (in eternity) and knew what we were going to do. I will give a great example in a future post that explains foreknowledge. - JRD]
-
2 Thessalonians 2:13:
13 But we should always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth.
[He chooses those who are going through sanctification. But note, from the previous post, “He foreknew, predestined, He called, He justified, He glorified.” Jesus: Many are called, but few are chosen, that we are responsible for our being chosen. Matthew 22:11-14. - JRD]
-
1 Peter 2:9:
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

1 Corinthians 1:2:
2 To the church of God which is in Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:

Romans 1:1-7:
Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, 4 who was declared the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles in behalf of His name, 6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ;
7 to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 8 which He lavished on us. In all wisdom and insight.

Matthew 22:11-14:
11 “But when the king came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes, 12 and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ And the man was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the servants, ‘Tie his hands and feet, and throw him into the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth in that place.’
14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”
[In the above the King is Jesus The man not dressed in wedding clothes was called to be a dinner guest but he failed to prepare (choose) to go further: be chosen. It was his choice to act so that he was going to be chosen by the King. He was not chosen because he just showed up for dinner.
And note that if one is not chosen, he will be throw into the outer darkness; and there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth in that place. - JRD]
In past posts I provided the verses that describe being chosen. It is a process of sanctification—being made more and more holy.
